So long summer

Summer, it seems, is officially over. As if Labor Day Weekend's coming and going wasn't enough, there's now a crispness to the air when I take the dogs out, the days are getting noticeably shorter, and College Gameday has debuted.

Fall's coming is always a bit shocking to me, because my husband, whom I love dearly, goes from having very few sports to watch (he doesn't prefer to watch baseball and golf on TV, usually) to having sports to watch nearly every day. If it's not College Gameday or college football on Saturday, there's always NFL on Sunday, or Monday night football, or the Friday night game, or the Thursday night game, or the preparation for his 3 fantasy football leagues, or Sports Center, or college highlights, or reading ESPN articles on his laptop, or reading ESPN articles on his Blackberry, or checking the status of his fantasy teams, or... You see why I notice the season's change.

Week 1 of college football is big. I mean the debut of College Gameday? So our friend Patrick came over to stay that Friday night (a couple of weeks ago), and he and Chase enjoyed the opening of the season together...

We have an airbed that we blow up for guests (which is what the green thing is that they're laying on), and that Saturday morning, "the boys" (including Frazier) all gathered on the airbed in the living room to watch the excitement unfold. (Sorry for all the parenthetical notes, but for those of you who don't know, "College Gameday" is a program on ESPN that Chase anticipates so much, he's like a kid on Christmas Eve the night before the first episode airs. It's a live show that commentates on the big college games that will be played each weekend of college football.) After Gameday concluded, Chase and Pat headed into Union Pub to hold a table for the Husker's first game.

As you can see, Union Pub was packed out with Huskers of all ages (including the sweet woman in the center of the picture who was wearing a 1975 Husker t-shirt!) as it always is on game days. I joined the boys at the pub as the Husker game started, and we sat out on the patio because the weather was so nice. That, and all the good tables that were left by the time the boys got there 2.5 hours before the Husker game started were out on the patio. In the picture above, you can see people standing in the background - it gets pretty full!

The Huskers are off to a smashing start so far (2 and 0). Chase and a couple of his buddies from high school have started to commentate a bit on the Husker's games after they've been played. If you're interested in hearing what they have to say (J. Urban, M. Murphy, and C. Francl) you can check out their audio-recorded comments on this blog run by Urban: http://bigredcritic.blogspot.com/

I started a new job a few weeks ago (more on that later, I promise!), and we are moving this weekend to an apartment much closer to where we work (also, a good deal cheaper in rent!). New job, looming move, lack of sleep - these all explain the lack of continutity to this post. Sorry! :) If you think of us, send up a prayer that we'll have patience and energy as we move Saturday and Sunday. As so often happens when we "start a new schedule" for fall and a new job we find how overcommitted we are, and it will only be by God's grace that I'll get through this coming weekend without some sort of mental or physical breakdown!

We're supposed to have internet hooked up on Sunday, but should that fall through, it may be a week or two before my next post. I'll get pictures of the new place up as soon as I can and try to do a proper job of telling a bit about my mysterious new job in the weeks to come.
