A day in the vacation of...

Our typical vacation day consisted of our godson, Beckett, getting his parents up around 7am (thanks Adam and Gina for letting the rest of us sleep in!). Adam and Gina would quietly take Beckett out onto the beach to play for a while. By the time the rest of us got up around 9am, we usually had new friends – hermit crabs, jelly fish, and itty bitty sand crabs – to meet. We’d all get breakfast and then head out to the beach for a morning dip. (At the end of this post there should be a video of a jelly fish that we caught - if you get it to play, skip to about 1/2 way through the video to see him. It was my first time using the video feature on my camera, so forgive the horible videography!)

The great thing about the Gulf Coast’s water is that it is SO WARM! It was probably 85 degrees or so. In the mornings when you got in, the water was just a bit warmer than the air, and by the afternoon the water was just a bit cooler than the air. It was like bathwater, and I can’t even express how incredible it was to feel cool but not cold in the water! Even with the warm water, it could be a real shock when it got dumped on an unsuspecting victim. Chase got Scottie really good when he was burried in the sand...

The area we were in had a lot of jelly fish around, so we had to do jelly fish patrol around the areas where Beckett played. The jelly fish we caught were usually about 2 to 3 inches in diameter, though we saw some as big as a softball. Most of us got stung at one point or another in the course of the week, but we had some stuff to put on stings that made them feel better pretty quickly – and Beckett (who’s 3 ½) never got stung, so that was a huge relief! Here's a sandcastle we built:

We’d all get warm and ready for food between noon and 1, so we’d head in for lunch, and after lunch we’d find something inside to do. A couple of afternoons we went to the USS Lexington, an aircraft carrier that was in service during WWII and clear until the early 1990’s. It was HUGE, and Beckett really liked all the airplanes. This picture was on the upper deck of the Lexington.

The Lexington even had an on-board Cocker Spaniel for a while, Admiral Wags. I think Brook is likely a descendant of this honorable dog - notice the black fur in the picture below. She's always had a regal aire about her. :)

In the evenings we either cooked dinner at home or went out for delicious food, and then played cards or a yard game, Baggo, that Nicole brought (see picture below). And we often finished out the evening sitting under the stars in the surf and chilling in God’s creation. The place may have been a total dive, but the 50 ft. walk from our back door to the ocean made the stay totally worth it!
